TWO SHEDS

Hailing from the Sacramento area, Two Sheds formed in 2003 when John Gutenberger (bass, vocals), Rusty Miller (drums) and Cailtin Gutenberger (guitar, vocals) began playing together for fun. In 2004, Cailtin tried her hand at writing a song at John’s encouragement, and has yet to stop.

Their collaboration made them realize their overwhelming natural musical chemistry, and Two Sheds went on to record 2006’s Strange Ammunition on UnderAcloud Records.

Their live shows take a different turn than the recordings. Two Sheds tends to go electric most of the time on tour thanks to the addition of James Finch, Jr. (guitar) in 2007 who helped flesh out the sound the band was able to capture on earlier recordings. This has led Two Sheds to share the stage with artists such as Victoria Wiliams, the Chapin Sisters, the Duke Spirit, Scout Niblett, Akron Family and Be Your Own Pet.

After several tour dates on the West Coast and a talked about performance at SXSW this year at Filter Magazine’s “Showdown at Cedar Street,” the band is touring behind their self-titled EP on Filter U.S. Recordings.

The digital-only EP conjures similarities to a vast array of artists — from Mazzy Star to Lucinda Williams, Neil Young to Nirvana. Guitarist/vocalist Caitlin Gutenberger revealed the recording process of standout track “To Be Alive.”

“I recorded it at home into Garage Band through one of those Blue USB microphones, then ran it through my home stereo and re-recorded the sound of it coming out of the speakers,” says Caitlin. “I threw in the sounds of my porch wind chimes and my cat eating cat food – and it turned out pretty neat. I feel like it’s the closet I’ve come to making a song sound the way I hear it in my head.”

Two Sheds will be on tour from late summer and all fall, with a full length on Filter U.S. Recordings to follow.

Recent Press:

“'I'm 15 centimeters tall' is the first line Caitlin Gutenberger sings on Two Sheds' new self-titled EP. There's something similarly modest about the Sacramento/San Francisco band Gutenberger shares with her husband Johnny (she plays guitar; he plays bass.) Steeped in daydream-y folk and hushed indie aesthetics, her cooed vocals and exquisite lyrics come together in a pleasingly organic way." - SF Weekly

"...their debut single 'You' encapsulates their point of view as musicians and artists. Opening as a delicate loping-blues style number with lo-fi electric guitar strums washing away behind Caitlin Gutenberger's smoky lyrics, the song evolves into a more atmospheric tone with arpeggiated guitars that tumble over one another while still perserving the track's soft intimacy...'You' is the kind of song that imaginably has to be sung with your eyes closed, and listened to in much the same fashion." - Filter.com

"Sacramento's music scene has generated a bumper crop of talented women who write, sing and play music in recent years. And if there's a single-hand list of the finest ladies in local music, Two Sheds' Caitlin Gutenberger gets a digit. The songs she writes are gems, she's a singer with unforgettabl presence..." - Sacramento News & Review
